One Team, Two Continents (1T2C) is a collaborative project between Global Leading Light Initiatives, Agape Weks and Chicago Knights Robotics Team, in partnership with the United States Embassy in South Africa. It is a cross-cultural robotics program involving teenage solution-makers around Port Alfred, South Africa and Chicago, USA. As one team, they learn and apply robotics skills to co-create a solution to one or more community challenge(s). They learn and use human centred design principles, propose a solution to a challenge as part of a project team. They work with industry professionals as mentors, to make working prototypes of the team's solution and submit their proposal to the Global Innovation Challenge, called FIRST Robotics Competition.
The 1T2C program involves a cross-cultural immersion program for selected participants called Ambassadors. This season, 20 Ambassadors/representatives, 10 each from Port Alfred and South Africa will be selected, based on their performance in the team to take part in a cultural exchange program. In December 2021, 10 members of the 1T2C team from Chicago will visit Port Alfred for a one-week cultural immersion program with their peers in Port Alfred. During this immersion project they will learn robotics skills, identify the challenge and begin working on the robotics-based solution. They will continue working on the solution remotely until April 2022, when 10 Ambassadors from South Africa will travel to Chicago to finalise the solution, submit their proposal to FIRST and take part in the competition. Please note that these dates are subject to change, based on unforeseen COVID-restrictions.
